Where Did all the Clay Poker Chips Go?
Less than a hundred years ago, clay poker chips were a staple in games
all over the country. But players gradually learned that clay is not strong
enough to hold chips together for any length of time. Today most chips are made
of a clay composite, fired in a hot oven, and glazed to last with a design of
your choice.
The usual sizes are 9 and 11.5 grams, with chips looking much like checkers
in the board game by that name. Denominations of poker chips range from five
cents to five thousand dollars. You can buy a smaller set of 200 pieces for
one or two people at a cost of between $100 and $200. Or you can get several
hundred chips in an aluminum case for a few hundred dollars. Individual pieces
typically start at about fifty cents. Accessories include chip carousels and
carrying cases, which can be bought separately and sometimes custom made to
order.
Poker chips can be purchased independently or they can be bought as part of
a set that includes one or two decks of playing cards, dice, an aluminum or
wooden carrying case, a carousel, and even a poker table top that can be folded
up and taken with you. You can find many dealers online by doing a word search
for “poker chips.” If you prefer, you can shop for used poker products
at online sites like Ebay or Amazon. When buying used products, check their
condition upon arrival and try to get a guarantee of some type. It all depends
on what you’re looking for and willing to pay.
Custom chips can include your name, a favorite theme or design, and a preferred
color. Of course they will be expensive, but big rollers won’t mind that.
