How to Learn a New Poker Rule

Playing poker isn’t that hard once you get used to it. There are several rules to learn, but as with any game, with patient persistence you will master the basics.

However, once you get the hang of traditional poker, there is always the added challenge of moving on to more exciting games, such as Five Card Stud and Rollercoaster. If you are having trouble learning the different rules, or tend to confuse them with the original game, here are a few tips for getting them straight.

Ask someone to explain a play or hand. Listen carefully. Ask questions for clarity, such as how a word is pronounced or what a term means, like “fold” or “see.” When the player finishes explaining, repeat a simple version in your own words to be sure you got it right. If so, then use an associative word or idea to help you remember it. For example, think of “flush” in terms of “flushed with excitement.” This is how many people can remember a variety of complex ideas.

When your turn comes to play a hand, in even fewer words than before, restate the basic idea as you begin to do it. Someone will stop you if it’s wrong. Continue playing and repeat the word silently in your mind as you do so. By now you probably have it memorized correctly and should be all right for the next one.

Learning to play poker is like learning anything else. You have to apply yourself to the task, check with the experts, get feedback, and do your best. It won’t be long until you become an expert when you take time to learn as you go. Chances are your diligence won’t go unnoticed, and you’ll be invited back for the next game, too.
