How About a Game of Poker?
Poker is a card game that has been around a long time. Often alluded
to in Western novels or films based on life in the Old West of the 19th century,
a game of poker would set the scene for a conflict between good and bad guys
who argued over who was cheating. Sometimes the game would end with a challenge
to a shootout or a duel, or perhaps even a killing (in more ways than one) at
the table. Certainly poker is a game with an exciting and checkered history.
Many people today play poker when they casually gather with friends at someone’s
house for a few low bets over beer and pretzels. A Friday evening out with the
boys has become part of the American middle-class way of life. The basic form
of the game involves a five-card hand that each person holds, with the highest
hand (from Ace to two in descending order) taking a variety of forms. The highest-ranking
cards hand takes the pot, which comprises the “ante” or betting
amount that each person puts in to provide winnings for each hand.
Winning card arrangements can include a royal or straight flush, four of a kind,
or full house, among others. Each player can discard and pick up new cards to
maintain a hand of five cards. One of the goals is not to let other players
see your cards or read your expression so that you can trump at the last to
win the hand.
Today’s poker games can take a variety of forms, from online poker to
strip poker and everything in between. Traditionally a man’s game, nowadays
many women play as well. Both sexes can compete for professional awards and
earnings in highly publicized events. Many friends play for pennies to avoid
accusations and quarrels. Over all, poker is meant to be a game of both skill
and chance.
